Fine February Art: Showing Yourself Some Love

The Fine February Art of Showing Yourself Some Love

If you are familiar with output required to function and maintain contemporary life, you know the value of showing yourself some love. We can all use reminders and ideas; February is the perfect time to enjoy replenishing oneself, and to find more of what you enjoy.

What does it take to do more than merely function and maintain your life, to even thrive and feel bliss?

Consider time for yourself in which to grow, to replace your wellness “reserves.” Where would you like to go? Is there a favorite place you haven’t been in a while, because you have been “too busy”? Is there a new place you’ve been meaning to visit and explore? What’s stopping you?

What do you need? Give yourself permission for it. Why not? If not now, when?

Plan to stop thinking about planning. Be. Put your favorite music on and enjoy. When do you feel at your best? Most energized, or relaxed? Why not give yourself more? Give yourself the gift of freedom, down time, rejuvenation time.
Dr. Andrew Weil states, “Don't be afraid to say "no" when someone asks you to do something. Learn your limits. You can't do it all and you shouldn't feel guilty about it.”

Be open to surprises. You might find yourself talking to a new friend while eating a quick lunch at your local Whole Foods. We can get stuck in our regular work circles and social circles; meeting new people can be a gift when you least expect it. Recently I crossed paths for the first time with a fellow Miamian, Ivette, and within moments we were laughing like old friends, and opening up unexpectedly… over lunch at cafeteria-style tables in a Whole Foods. Who knew?

Consider that less stuff means more time for loved ones and finding what is important. What can you clear out? Make room for your life. Let go. Recently my sister packed up a layer of the toys in her daughter’s room, and the five-year-old said, “I have this paint?” Usually her mother’s shadow, she spent her first afternoon on her own, happily painting in her room with the newly discovered paints which had been there all along.

What are you reading? According to Dr. Alice Domar, executive director of the
Domar Center for Mind/Body Health in Boston, MA, “women take care of everyone else, but not themselves.” Her best selling title, Self-Nurture, has a new follow-up: BE HAPPY WITHOUT BEING PERFECT: How to Break Free from the Perfection Deception. The book addresses “why women just won’t give themselves a break or give themselves permission to enjoy all of the good things in their lives.”
I suggest it is time that we all should do just that.

February is a short month. Enjoy its days and enjoy each chance to make and revel in loving choices, especially for yourself.

How do you maintain and create your own well-being?

Finding Your Way

Here in the mountains you think differently… snow and big trees, old trees, hover over you here…. The possibilities in life expand to match the expansive space in Colorado… rock, canyon, mountain, tree, clouds, air, pure air as if it is the best air you have ever breathed in your entire life… peace is possible and colorado demands that you become at peace with the environment around you because you have no choice… it’s bigger than you and the other humans… you realize you are just visiting…the Colorado earth has been here before and will be here long after you… a rhythm of water flowing below you in a canyon bed reminds you of how quickly things pass, and sings for you to slow down… you can feel your blood pumping, warming muscles and skin. You dream of days of simplicity: what do you really need, after all?

Each morning the sun rises again over green boulders and shiny snow, the world is fresh for you to explore, to leave the past behind, to find a new pace… where wood is weathered, seasons capture your attention… a collection of ice forms as thick as phone poles, saplings, on your back porch: now you should stop and hear what is inside you, seeing these icicles like daggers, another force, solid, containing air and water, coatings over coatings, layers, the earth is wrapped in snow and ice with green and sun and blue sky still over head.

Footsteps crunch the snow. People fight the slippery powder to join the Boulder rhythm, civilization right down the curvy icy road: faces, hearts beating, lungs breathing oxygen in and out, color, people layered in clothing, holding warm cups, and then, return to the quieter mountains for the journey into their sanctuaries.

Colorado stars shine over the snow and cliffs and rushing water, the canyon holds its life tight for the dark cold night.

Don't miss the beautiful pictures!

The Fine Art of Self-Care: massage, iced mocha, cupcake,...and then the shopping began...

So, I decided to do some "Blissing" today... a random Tuesday... I was thinking about getting the oil changed, and realized that was not an important matter, but I really needed something new to wear (and my own tune-up)! So, headed to the Sunset Place, South Miami Ann Taylor Loft for some serious summer markdowns... so much cute stuff and such deals! I also used my 15% off educator discount...gotta love that. I didn't remember the code from a time I registered in this educator discount system at their site a while back, but a manager was able to put in the code since I had my faculty ID.

After this, I headed into the Barnes and Noble for a cool-down drink... it was up to 93 here today... and had to go for a cupcake with my iced mocha. While there, I spotted a great Godiva deal!!! Buy one Godiva box, get one 1/2 off!!! Great score for gifts for someone you appreciate, and by the way, this was turning into a self-appreciation afternoon. I managed to restrain myself at the Godiva on sale option...for today anyway.

There is an amazing outdoor drop-in massage guy there... I am all about body work to alleviate the "blogging" muscles in my upper back!!! ;) He hooked me up and he was so good that he even got some cracking noises out of my back... at one point when he was working on the upper brick, I mean upper back/shoulder area, I heard cracks and I actually wondered if they were coming out of me or if he was being injured and cracking his own finger bones on my upper brick, I mean back. :)

I stopped in quickly to The Gap and found some fabulous little headbands with three little rosettes! One red one was left, and after I tried on every color, I realized of course it was the cutest and that was why there was only one left... also found a great top in there... for work...of all things. (I tried to find a pic of the headband, but it's not on their site...but I did fall in love with these shoes, pictured above, there today!) Again, deals... I am so not about paying retail prices. Really, normally I am not even that big of a shopper, preferring the beach to the retail environment!

Next, Mr. Wonderful was staying late in the lab at UM tonight to finish some projects, and asked for some dinner on my way back there tonight. I picked up sushi for us at Whole Foods, and of course, checked in on the aisle I like to think of as SPA products. They have a deal right now on ALBA extra moisturizing shower cream, score, and I also picked up the Ginger Mint Aura Cacia bath foam...can't get enough of that stuff....bliss in a jar that makes bliss in your tub... :)

Before you think I was having too much fun today, keep in mind that I did teach a class in the morning, and another one this evening. I just know how to squeeze in the good stuff when necessary!!! Sometimes a little self love and appreciation is in order...or, as I am trying to practice for the rest of my life, it's always in order, sometimes you just need a little extra time and tlc just for you, just because!!! I'm coming into the home stretch on teaching these summer classes, and can't wait for a nice little break before the fall semester.

Sometimes just the little things suffice for how I show myself some love: the yummy blueberries I've been scarfing since they are in season and so delicious, and my body just really wants them right now...or the sweet strawberries Mr. W. just brought me as I was writing about berries!

How do you show yourself some love? Is it taking time to read a book? Stare at a beautiful view? Travel? Remind yourself that... ???

Off to the secret oasis...

Remember this place?

Yes. That place. It is calling my name. I will be plunging in to that water in less than 20 minutes!

Will report back on the tropical pool bliss!

bliss seekers

I once read a book called Girl Seeks Bliss, and it made a lot of sense! So much non-bliss automatically falls in our laps, we have to arrange some bliss and be able to have free time for bliss to just cross our paths!

Last night my Mr. Bliss, aka the chocolateshoesandcoffee poster, (and founder!) made me some Ghiradelli Double Chocolate brownies, and kicked it up with dark chocolate M and M's on top. Yum!

For my birthday this year, he bought me a two month yoga card I requested... sadly I haven't been going as much as I should, but we are coming up on some time off, and I will be able to use it a lot more. Looking forward to the yoga happy body during our time off, and lots of beach walks, salty swims, and writing.

Hope you are having a blissful weekend!

What brings you bliss???
