The best place to skinny dip under tropical stars...

Having lived in the midwest and East Coast, when I encountered Coral Gables, FL, for the first time ten years ago, I did not know what hit me! Since then I've never been able to get enough of its gorgeous architecture, sweet little details, and tropical bliss. The city was dreamed up by a poet, George Merrick, and called "The City Beautiful."

He envisioned it as the American Riviera, and today people dock boats behind their houses in some sections, and the heady mix of tropical foliage and Mediterranean detail never fail to make me happy. In the hot summer, the Gables seems to take a collective deep breath and simultaneously drink many cold drinks, and skinny dipping in the backyard pools under the stars is the way to go!

I once spent a summer healing my heart in a Gables backyard, when the summer air and the pool water blended together...quite ethereal... Each morning I marveled at the profusion of red hibiscus and the ever greener, greener than green tropical greenery thriving under daily afternoon showers.

If you come, be sure not to miss the Venetian Pool, The Biltmore Hotel, the UM campus, shopping on the Miracle Mile, Books and Books on Aragon Avenue, and a few hours to bike or walk around the streets of the Gables, the Little Gables... such beauty to explore! Wait until we cool off a little... you will love it.

"You're just a bad person"

...my undergrad business students told me today, when I played Devil's Advocate to their Environmental/Recycling Power Point end-of-class presentation.

I adopted a hypothetical stance, and asked them, "Why should I care?" I said, I'll speak for someone who is not in the room, (of 12 or so of us today.) "Once I let go of my trash, in my dumpster behind my building in South Beach, why do I care; it doesn't affect me..." I said. If you don't care about recycling and the earth, "You're just a bad person..." they finally informed me. (I do care... but am trying to figure out more about why without sounding didactic.)

Maybe not directly, they tried to explain, do you have pets? (I do, two cats,) but students next to me said no and were honest and shared that this was how they actually felt. Why do they care? They've heard lots of lectures and lots of facts and moral high ground, and I just don't think we respond well to that......"Oh, I'll be gone by then..."one added. Apparently some of my students really do care, and maybe more than I thought. They need the reasons for caring, though, and without sermons. "Education" was mentioned, being educated about our products and what they do to the environment... so glad this statement came from them!

We talked about how some businesses are making earth-friendly choices in cases where it is more economical, for the dollar reasons; we talked about how consumers are making choices based on eco-friendly companies. I just wanted them to vocalize why it really matters, to tell their classmates WHY they should care about this topic... they said they'd get back to me, and we have another person presenting on "Green" in Business tomorrow---we'll see what happens.

By the way, I did tell them about the Rumpke Dump/Landfill I passed each time I was driving to Miami University as an Undergrad, and how it quadrupled into mountainous proportions over night... and how someone was killed working in the landfill, and about the water pollution from the dump, etc... I asked them if they had ever heard of "NIMBY", not in my backyard... they hadn't. I told them what I remembered of being 10 or so and hearing that term in the news...

The Greener Grass Organization seems to help with some answers for my students and me...: "It absolutely makes no sense to accumulate waste. GGO: 'Is zero waste really possibly today?'

LL: It’s not a matter of it being possible—it’s vital.

LL: Unless we find another planet to live on, we’ve got to do something. Frankly, in my opinion, attitudes have been changing of course, but there not going to take a sharp turn until the environment really begins to collapse. As the environment begins to collapse were going to have to re-assess what were doing and why were doing it." Lynn Landes-- Zero Waste America

That requires a really hard look at civilization that bases its decisions on what makes money and what doesn’t make money. So we have people running around trying to develop products with no thought as to their impact on the environment – they’re just thinking what will make them money, what constitutes as a job and that sort of thing. Lynn Landes-- Zero Waste America

LL: That’s not only foolish and wasteful in terms of importing clothes and food from half way around the world. Even if the transportation was ‘energy free’ on a solar ship—still this society has lost the skills to survive. So basically were becoming over time more and more ignorant of what it takes to really survive in the most basic sense and to survive in a technology world.

LL: Waste is more than just what you may think of as trash.
Zero waste is just a recognition that what were doing isn’t going to work and doesn’t make sense. You cant be a secure nation, city or town if you rely on food clothing and shelter from far away.

How would you explain to someone why to care without sounding preachy... keep in mind I teach a lot of undergraduates.... ;) I am just now starting to really connect the dots on a lot of disjointed info...it is starting to all matter to me more than ever...

The Beat Goes On... at BTC

Be gentle to the earth...and yourself! Today you are seeing images from BTC Elements, with inspiring uses of skateboards, potato chip bags, bamboo, ties and glass!!! The very skateboard once used to precariously roll in traffic can now stop traffic as colorful bangles and earrings!

Your potato chip bag can hold your wine bottle; bamboo will keep your neck warm, and vintage necklaces are new again with upcycled glass, also the material for the "rock star" wine accessories. I love the tie purse... much better use than collecting dust in the back of someone's closet or filling up a landfill...have you seen the *tie skirt*? So cute!

How are you loving on our shared place of residence? Are you "upcycling"? Are you concerned about making a softer eco-footprint?

As a side note, I have been sad when I go to my beach and find empty bottles and trash all over the sand. What is up with the litterbugs visiting my neighborhood beach? Even going in the water, recently I've been greeted by a few pieces of trash floating around...and not a lot bothers me, but this...does... on multiple levels.

Honestly, I wasn't thinking about all this even a few years back, but my awareness is growing and so are my choices. Here is some food for thought, from MSNBC: "The irony is delicious: The very same moralistic movement that hatched today's organic craze has been a muse to the food industry's wasteful packaging practices."

It seems that it's about a lot more than those made-fun-of tree-huggers, or jumping on a trendy buzz-filled bandwagon...What do you think???

The Fine Art of Self-Care: massage, iced mocha, cupcake,...and then the shopping began...

So, I decided to do some "Blissing" today... a random Tuesday... I was thinking about getting the oil changed, and realized that was not an important matter, but I really needed something new to wear (and my own tune-up)! So, headed to the Sunset Place, South Miami Ann Taylor Loft for some serious summer markdowns... so much cute stuff and such deals! I also used my 15% off educator discount...gotta love that. I didn't remember the code from a time I registered in this educator discount system at their site a while back, but a manager was able to put in the code since I had my faculty ID.

After this, I headed into the Barnes and Noble for a cool-down drink... it was up to 93 here today... and had to go for a cupcake with my iced mocha. While there, I spotted a great Godiva deal!!! Buy one Godiva box, get one 1/2 off!!! Great score for gifts for someone you appreciate, and by the way, this was turning into a self-appreciation afternoon. I managed to restrain myself at the Godiva on sale option...for today anyway.

There is an amazing outdoor drop-in massage guy there... I am all about body work to alleviate the "blogging" muscles in my upper back!!! ;) He hooked me up and he was so good that he even got some cracking noises out of my back... at one point when he was working on the upper brick, I mean upper back/shoulder area, I heard cracks and I actually wondered if they were coming out of me or if he was being injured and cracking his own finger bones on my upper brick, I mean back. :)

I stopped in quickly to The Gap and found some fabulous little headbands with three little rosettes! One red one was left, and after I tried on every color, I realized of course it was the cutest and that was why there was only one left... also found a great top in there... for work...of all things. (I tried to find a pic of the headband, but it's not on their site...but I did fall in love with these shoes, pictured above, there today!) Again, deals... I am so not about paying retail prices. Really, normally I am not even that big of a shopper, preferring the beach to the retail environment!

Next, Mr. Wonderful was staying late in the lab at UM tonight to finish some projects, and asked for some dinner on my way back there tonight. I picked up sushi for us at Whole Foods, and of course, checked in on the aisle I like to think of as SPA products. They have a deal right now on ALBA extra moisturizing shower cream, score, and I also picked up the Ginger Mint Aura Cacia bath foam...can't get enough of that stuff....bliss in a jar that makes bliss in your tub... :)

Before you think I was having too much fun today, keep in mind that I did teach a class in the morning, and another one this evening. I just know how to squeeze in the good stuff when necessary!!! Sometimes a little self love and appreciation is in order...or, as I am trying to practice for the rest of my life, it's always in order, sometimes you just need a little extra time and tlc just for you, just because!!! I'm coming into the home stretch on teaching these summer classes, and can't wait for a nice little break before the fall semester.

Sometimes just the little things suffice for how I show myself some love: the yummy blueberries I've been scarfing since they are in season and so delicious, and my body just really wants them right now...or the sweet strawberries Mr. W. just brought me as I was writing about berries!

How do you show yourself some love? Is it taking time to read a book? Stare at a beautiful view? Travel? Remind yourself that... ???

Summer Reading

This is a lock of hair on the cover above...
I wondered what it was about as I began the book...
Today I am beginning this book, Olive Kitteridge, with great anticipation, after just having finished Amy and Isabelle. Amy and Isabelle was one of the very best books I have read in a very long time: mother, daughter, lovers, friends, secrets, just SO TRUE TO LIFE.

In fact I was a little sad to see it end... It is a great summer book, since the story takes place over a summer...just a truly beautifully written book to enjoy.

Any other good recommendations out there? Thanks!!! Hope you are enjoying your summer reading, too...

So you make my heart dance

Are you watching this show with the other millions of viewers?

I am really excited to watch the 100th episode tonight. Ellen has been cracking me up on the judge's panel: "I can do that, too..." she tells the dancers...(just like I can do what they are doing, too, ;)

These dancers are so amazing to see when they go further than they realized they could! Magical! I am just a little bit excited that 3 of them are from South Florida!!!

Who makes your own heart dance? The energy... the joy... the inspiration...the strength...They are all amazing!!! (click for top 8 pictures!)

Have you seen the amazing pictures taken in this SYTYCD slideshow? So behind the scenes from the Black-Eyed Peas performance recently! Beautiful still shots....

Delightful Blog find: Wanderings of a Wannabe

I found this picture at a wonderful new blog, Wanderings of a Wannabe: "A recent college graduate. A sincere passion for decorating. Just Married. Always searching for clever and unique ways to decorate life on a limited budget. " I just love it: "decorate life" !

Recently I posted about signing on for another year in my teeny Miami Beach apartment, and felt a major urge to nest and redesign, edit, beautify the space, etc. While seeking inspiration, I found myself at her blog, and unable to contain my delight. It's beautiful: she is doing design, fashion, adventures, pets, beautiful and unique objects, etc.

With Ghirardelli chocolate coffee in hand, I scrolled through her blog, unable to do anything else until I saw. the. entire. thing. I finished the coffee, and poured more. And I was compelled. to. comment. all. over. the. place. (She probably wondered who this crazy person was! :) It was the 4th of July; I had a little free time and was dying for inspiration. It was the perfect find.

For example, view her April postings. Then enjoy the rest!

Thanks for the great work, Wanderings of a Wannabe!!!

I LOVE MISS BLISS

"Mr. Wonderful" here........

I need to step Miss Bliss' blog up a couple of notches but until I can I did a little "Summer Look" for the blog to freshen it up. I put all you faithful followers front and center of the page to celebrate all of you who make her so happy! Sometimes it is should be mentioned how we all benefit from the comments of others and the information that is passed. Recipes for chocolate concoctions to shoe sales to great beaches to mention just a couple.

I also thought it good to put the followers up front as they are really contributors and deserve recognition.

So Happy Recognition Day and for those of you who are "ghosting" the site join in and have fun!!!

FOR the LOVE of DRESSES

Happy New Week! I have dresses on the brain today, and in particular, printed dresses! The first ten are from Bluefly, and the remaining are... Overstock...I had no idea what possibilities they had. (and 2.95 shipping???)

I am a serious dress lover, and tend to play it safe with solids. Today I celebrate prints... I am oh-sooo-particular about prints, there are some scary ones out there, right? So, in celebration of summer's "short lease" and summery colors and prints... ENJOY.

Btw, the mannequin images reminded me of my niece, recently visiting and walking with me to the beach. When we passed some of the clothing stores on the way, she asked, in her 5 year old wisdom, "why are those fake people in the windows?"

I love the flattering design of this black and white dress...not to mention the fun print...

had to throw in a Betsey Johnson for fun!

love this fabric...

What do you think? Is it sensory overload? Do you have any favorites?
Why don't we have more beautiful prints available and less of the scary ones?

Summer Lovin'

"The world is so full of a number of things,
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings."
---Robert Louis Stevenson
_
What are the "number of things" that make you as "happy as a king"?
As you can see, today I am enjoying:
anticipation,
care,
fully being-in-the-moment,
and
joy

in the split second right before a big watery splash!!!
